With Labor Day upon us, summer is officially coming to a close (Sucks). I want to review a summer movie in memoriam of what was summer 2010. Weekend at Bernie's is a plot that is, well, kinda gross. These two entry level employees at Bernie Lomax's insurance company uncover a pretty hefty fraud scheme. When they bring the news to Bernie, he is appalled and wants to get to the bottom of this. What he has planned is to invite the boys to his island resort, wine and dine them, then snuff them out, since he is the one who is behind these frauds. Unfortunately Bernie has a bigger problem. Some of his own people want him gone, so that's what actually happens. When the boys find Bernie's body they have a choice to make. Call the cops and give a statement, or carry Lomax's lifeless corpse around the island for the weekend mooching off of Bernie's popularity.(Like I said, Grody). They choose the latter based on some hair brain idea that popularity is more important than not carrying around a dead guy. I'm a little freaked out by this. I don't like funerals, let alone being Siamese twins with a freshly departed for three days. They get what ever they want, and as it looks they are very goods friends with Lomax. The extremely good acting from the guys makes Bernie seem really full of life to all the people he encounters. This makes the hitman very angry that he did not succeed at his job. The movie is not an original comedy per say, but at the same time, I don't recall any other film that used the dead guy plot to promote a summer movie. Released in 1989, I wonder if the actor that played Bernie was the highest paid actor per line ever? Just a thought. Always fun to watch not only for the plot that is, but also for the 1980's hair and clothes. Still fun today to ponder why the hell people wore what they wore.
