Funny Games

I've often stated that the most horrific movies are not ones about Blair Witches, Freddie Kruegger, or Michael Myers. They are in fact films like Funny Games, and The Strangers. These films do not surround paranormal or freakishly scary fictional characters that are mostly impossible to exist. They are in fact the ones that involve real people who seem normal, but inside they are evil. Imagine two boys in their early 20's ring your doorbell on your vacation home looking to borrow some eggs. They are polite and dressed in tennis attire. Would you think anything of it? They know your neighbors and supposedly the eggs are for them. You invite them in, and that's when it gets crazy. The boys, Peter and Paul, played by the brilliant Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet have a few screws loose. The home they have entered belongs to Anna and George Farber (Noami Watts and Tim Roth). Anna tries to be polite even when the boys begin to mess with her by dropping the eggs they were just given. She gives them more hoping they leave. George enters unaware of the situation and begins asking for the details. He is not treated nicely by the boys. He then asks them to leave and with the boys attitude along with a Golf club things go south very quickly for the Farbers. It is an extremely disturbing film, because of it's possible reality. Why would they do this to this family that had never met them? That is the Question the Farbers continue to ask. Because you answered the door... Terrifying. The creepiest part of the whole thing is the lack of emotion the boys carry. It's almost evil or demonic. As hostages with a small boy they are constantly trying to figure out an escape plan. Then near the end, an IMPOSSIBLE question/choice is asked of George. The ultimate nightmare for anyone. You will know if you have seen it. Once the Farbers briefly grasp the upper hand the direction of the film takes a genius turn that lots of people would hate. I enjoyed the movie, because as I said, it's the closest thing to reality for any horror film. Not much blood, just unnecessary violence and mind games.
