Enemy at the Gates

YES, YES, YES! I watched this for the first time last night. I have been pushed in every way, short of being tied down to watch this. I really had little desire to see it, but maybe that is because I really wasn't sure about the story behind the story. I was under the impression it was a WWII movie about stopping Adolf. Right and yet so wrong. The Nazi 3rd Reich is sweeping Europe and if they take Stalingrad, USSR, it's over. When Vassili Zaitsev (Law) is under the gun to save his own life, he shows what he has. Am eye for the kill. A sharpshooters eye and precision. He doesn't miss. Ever. He is not only able to save his own skin by killing 5 Nazi's with only 5 bullets. Impressive, Most Impressive. At least that's what Danilov (Fiennes) thinks. He begins by writing the story from a first hand perspective, to spread the word. He then convinces Kruschev that Vassili is the "Hope". He could get people to believe in the cause once again. Vassili then is put on Sniper assignment anywhere and everywhere Nazi's may be. Slowly and methodically he disposes of the small regimes until Hitler becomes a bit nervous. The Nazi's have no answers for this precise killer, so they bring back an old legend. Major Konig (Ed Harris) is their ace in the hole. He is a better shooter / assassin that Vassili. He is sent to hunt Vassili and this is when it gets intense. A little Ruski/Nazi version of Tom and Jerry. If it isn't crazy enough, a girl gets involved. Where there's a girl, there's trouble. Tania (The Lovely Rachel Weiss) has a bit of a thing for Vassili, while Danilov has a thing for her. When at war, men should not be at war with each other. Especially for a piece of A**, Hot A** sure, but nonetheless. I would think not dying would be the high priority, but whatevskis. (That is Russian for Eh.) This movie is funny to me, because we as movie watchers, Free American movie watchers, are rooting for a communist country to win. Lesser of the Evils, I guess, but a great story either way. This movie has everything. Love story, action, intensity, killing, and Bob Freakin Hoskins. I loved this movie, and being based on actual events, though Exaggerated, still very enjoyable. Watch it, enjoy it, and push it onto your friends.
