I Love my readers. Sometimes they just make my job easier. The hardest part of writing a review daily is merely picking the movie to do. I actually had another movie in mind for tonight, but when this film was presented to me, I just can't say no. I'm what you would call a pleaser. This film is funny, it feels real-in a sense-, and it's uncomfortable in every way possible. Uncomfortable from a Mother's point of view, from a son's point of view, and from an outsiders point of view watching the turmoil that is the "Mother/Son" relationship. The film starts off with a Psychologist named Lisa (The always lovely Mrs. Streep) analyzing the recent divorce of Rafi (Uma Thurman). Apparently Rafi has commitment issues with a side of intimacy issues. She is urged to put it out there and let her guard down. By doing this, she is able meet and enjoy the company of a young man. David (Bryan Greenberg) is a 23 year old artist. Painter to be more specific. He meets the 37 year old Rafi, and their physical relationship kicks off like a rocket. This is the point where the movie gets really good. Rafi is ecstatic to tell Lisa of new whirlwind romance. She poses the question about the age difference, to which Lisa tells her, You only live once, or something to that effect. Lisa is happy for Rafi until she is hit with the visual of her only son kissing her client. All of the sudden Lisa flashes back to the in depth detailed conversation her and Rafi had about the "Physical" part of this new romance, and she is almost sick. Bryan, being an independent, non momma's boy male, insists that the relationship goes beyond physicality. He says it's deeper than that. Real substance, but I'm not sure he even believes that. The 3 of them are always getting together for dinner or drinks or whatever reason to try and break the ice. Lisa just can't get past it, and her animosity puts strain on the young couple. David finally makes his stand, but is it too late? Can the cougar/youngan relationship work? I like the direction the movie takes. The older woman going for the younger man. They also do a good job of portraying how a 23 year old male thinks. Sure, sex and video games = Good. Being tied down with a mentally battered woman, I mean normal woman, I mean anyone but himself = Eh. She of course want a man, not a boy. He cannot grasp why she thinks the way she does. Men are stupid, and women are complex. Let's just leave it at that. This is good twist on an old story and definitely worth a look. As far as I am concerned, if Meryl Streep has any screen time in any film, it is just going to be that much better.
