"They put the bone in Zamboni." Just one of the many quotes that makes this laugh a minute comedy worth watching. A plot that follows two of the worlds greatest men's singles figure skaters that are banned for life after placing 1st and 2nd in a tournament and getting into an all out brawl that gave the sport a black eye. Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) is a pompous, arrogant, womanizer. Jimmy McElroy (Heder) is a tiny feminine man, although straight, he really does a good job of bringing our stereotype of male figure skaters to the forefront. These two do not get along. In fact they are sworn enemies. After they are booted from the sport they defined, Chazz ends of being an alcoholic sex addict who is the lead in The Grublets. grublets is an "On ice" kids production where he is anything but child friendly. Two of the funniest scenes of the movie involve the Grublets production. Rob Cordry directs this show and confronts Chazz about being drunk to which Chazz breaks a Jack Daniels bottle open to drink out of the broken glass. Second, he pukes inside his costume while performing and narrating his experience. Then we have McElroy. He now sells skating equipment at a sporting goods store. One day McElroy's coach played by the brilliant (Craig T. Nelson which probably got the part due to his "Coaching" experience) decides it's time for him to get back in. They were only banned from Men's singles, so Coach decides to put him in a doubles competition. Unfortunately he doesn't have a partner.....Enter Chazz. The first male/male team. The training routine's are hysterical and their hate for each other fuels the fire. They have now taken the scene by storm and they know who they have to beat to be champions. The Van Waldenbergs. A brother/sister team played by Will Arnett and his real wife Amy Poehler. They are creepily close with each other and their routines are uncomfortable to say the least. They have a third sibling played by The Office's Pam. Jenna Fischer is the black sheep of that family for no good reason. They constantly guilt her into doing their bidding, which eventually includes destroying the Michaels-McElroy team. One of the most disgusting on screen displays ever is when Jimmy is handcuffed to the inside of a bathroom stall and must do unthinkable things to free himself. Then the funniest chase scene ever ensues when Stranz (Arnett) is chasing Chazz through the city on ice skates on they get literally stuck on the escalator. As I said earlier, Laugh a Minute. Additional actors that show up on screen are Luke Wilson, Andy Richter, Nich Swardson, William Fichter, and Scott Hamilton. A brilliant movie about a less than brilliant sport. If the sport was anything like it is portrayed it would double it's viewership immediately. I got the idea for tonighs post from a fellow blogger who posed a poll question today that got me thinking. This particular blogger is a buddy of mine that writes about anything sports. If you like sports check out what he has to say. http://throughfrankieseyes.blogspot.com/.
